Design: an original recreation of a Byzantine ceiling cross -- a Roman cross beneath an arch, flanked by framed diamonds -- redrawn as line geometry after published descriptions of the painted ceilings in the rock-cut churches of Cappadocia, in what is now central Turkey. It is a recreation, not a tracing: no photograph of any church was copied, and every line is drawn from geometry rather than lifted from an image. Why geometry. The Christians who cut these churches out of volcanic rock decorated many of them with crosses, lattices and bands rather than figures. They were not opposed to images -- Cappadocia's monks argued FOR them during the iconoclast controversy. The painted geometry sits alongside that, and the reason particular workshops chose it is not recorded. What is not known: the meanings of the individual elements.
